Workshop Description
The “Ravenna method” or Double-Reverse method is a 2000 year old technique handed down from the Byzantine era. It applies traditional ancient methods of laying tesserae, but is also useful in contemporary applications and is still in use by many Italian professional mosaicists today. The method uses a temporary lime paste binder to create and make changes to a mosaic before the process to transferring and committing it to a permanent binder of thin-set mortar. Instruction in the use of hammer and hardie (the ancient tools for cutting tesserae) will be covered and practiced using marble and Italian smalti glass to reproduce a portion of an ancient or classical mosaic. Students will choose a subject from several examples provided.
The focus of the course will be learning the “Ravenna method” and applying it’s traditional techniques, however, due to the nature of the “Ravenna method” there will be time for students to use this new knowledge to work on a 2nd smaller contemporary mosaic of their own design working directly into thin-set mortar within the frame.
This class is appropriate for beginner through advanced students
Our work day will mirror that of a professional mosaicist from 10 am - 6pm with a break for lunch.
