Floating Mosaics-Creating a Mosaic Orb for the Garden
Workshop Date (s)
August 27- 30
Falmouth, Cape Cod
|Many artists have created garden mosaic art in the form of fountains, birdbaths, gazing balls and stepping stones. But how many of these creations will float? Learn the secrets, techniques and specialized materials behind award-winning mosaicist Julie Richey’s Four Seasons garden orbs.
In this four day hands-on workshop, students will learn assembly techniques, gain cutting skills and familiarize themselves with the multi-step waterproofing system that leads to perfectly weatherproof outdoor mosaics.
This course is best suited to those with intermediate to advanced mosaic skills. It is not a beginner class. Students should have familiarity with cutting vitreous glass and designing images appropriate for execution in mosaic. They also should enjoy and have dexterity working with small pieces that must be handled with a tweezer.
Students should bring some of their own tools including wheeled glass nippers, tweezers, safety glasses if preferred, work aprons and sketchbooks. Materials will be provided to create an 8” mosaic sphere using vitreous mosaic glass such as Bisazza and Trend. Students may wish to embellish their design with extra elements brought from home such as millefiori, small fused glass pieces or other weatherproof items.
Julie will provide instruction on the techniques required to assemble the orbs and create a successful 3-D design. Once students begin the assembly process, they will receive individual instruction as their mosaic progresses. Julie will also present a special slide lecture created for her 2011 talk at the Mosaic Art School of Sydney, Australia entitled “20 Years, 10 Projects, 30 + Lessons Learned.” Students will gain insight into working on large public and small private commissions; marketing a mosaic business; organizing work flow and dealing with issues that crop up on the business side of mosaics. Minimum 10 students.
